It's been an age, thanks to the international break and my own travel, but I'm excited to go cheer for the #WashingtonSpirit in person today! I'm bringing along my sister and her family, who are all first timers (but long time listeners to my #nwsl and uswnt rambles). Hopefully we'll all have fun despite the heat

Going to see my first in-person #NWSL game this afternoon as the Washington Spirit take on the Portland Thorns (excellent name). Audi Field is only 15 min away and there is a free #bike valet. Also now following the @nwsl group. #WashingtonSpirit

Wow wow wow! What an ending. Who could have predicted the only goal would be a banger from Mariana Speckmaier, her first professional goal?

I feel bad for Orlando, who were really the stronger team throughout. But some between Speckmaier, some clutch saves by both Barney and the crossbar, the Spirit steal a win.

Exploria Stadium (where Orlando play) is depressingly empty right now. To cheer myself up I looked at NWSL attendance statistics.

"Overall, 2023 NWSL attendance is up 19 percent over 2022."

Three teams: LA, SD, and PDX, have attendances above one or more MLS teams.

If San Diego was in the MLS they'd be in the top 50% for attendance.

Disappointed by the Spirit's starting XI. This game has absolutely no meaning - why even have Lyza Bosselmann on the roster if you're not willing to start her in a game like this?

Also concerned about Tara McKeown being out for injury. She's been one of the brightest spots for the Spirit this year. Though I'm curious to see how Thompson does.

Orlando having the better start but it's still anyone's game.

Finally caught up on #FifaWWC - specifically Brazil v Panama.

I was nervous for Riley Tanner after Marissa Sheva's debut (they both play for the #WashingtonSpirit and so they're both my favorite players on their respective national teams) but she was a very bright spot for Panama.

On the other side, whew, Ary Borges. Soph Smith better watch out, Ary's gunning for the WC golden boot. Although I think the goal she assisted was the best one. What incredible, smooth team play.
