400 followers · 563 posts · Server mstdn.socialI went to a Wassail yesterday, feeling self-conscious, cynical and an outsider for about 10 minutes before it became a lovely thing to be part of - clattering about to chase away the bad spirits and to wake up the trees. Watching children place toast on the trees and pour cider at the roots (is this where the expression toasting comes from?) and singing to the trees. It was cold but we drank mulled cider or apple juice and everyone was smiling.
Not everything is awful.

The “new normal” means singing from out on the sidewalk, but we did go in to the very last house. The couple there used to schedule their Christmas party around our visits, so it felt like the right exception to make.🎅🏻🧑🏻🎄

Just wondering why we don‘t wassail our apple trees. Most (fermented apple juice on the very sour side) is our national drink and there are 7.1 million fruit trees in Baden-Württemberg, most of them are apple trees #Streuobstwiesen #wassailing
