A 2021 Ocean Conservancy report referencing Jambeck et. al. (2015) found 5 nations responsible for 50% of #global #ocean #plasticspollution, 4 from #ASEAN. It argues that #wastepicking by ISCs offer a plausible way to reduce maritime plastics pollution, but to do so requires improved structural mechanisms, e.g., access to formal financial tools/incentives and workforce protections against plastics processing profiteers, as well govt.-mandated #LVP price stabilisation.
