It appeals to narcissistic personality types and most likely drives them towards more extreme acts and expressions.
Some people will always become "followers" of charlatans, but what ordinary people generally do is "keep an eye" on, or "watch" something.
The poorly informed feel validated and even agitated seeing their leader/savior having "xxx million followers" when a third of those are bots and another third just watching to see what damage the sociopathic nutjob does next.
Would people accept a more neutral term (e.g. watchers/watches/watched by), or is "followers" it, end of?
