Ah, looks like our local water district still has restricted #watering schedules for #landscapes. (which makes sense... we may have had rain, but the heat and drought conditions still are a threat).

Update: I was happy with the test setup with the hanging water bucket and wanted to try the garden hose next. First thing I found out was that I need an adapter that I don't have.

If the system is going to be connected to the garden hose pressurized by an electric #pump, there needs to be an #adapter that not only reduces the diameter of the hose, but also reduces or regulates the #water pressure. With the elevated tank, the water pressure is given by the elevation, basically the potential energy stored by me hanging the bucket up there 😆, and it's not a lot and very stable. But the electrical water pump is stronger, and the #pressure fluctuates.

I looked around for a second hand adapter, but that's a very specific thing. Maybe if I wait a year or two I will see an offer. But our #holiday is this year, and I still need time to test before that. I searched for alternatives. There's a similar adapter by the competitor brand that I could get, #Gardena, but the hose diameter is different on that one, so I would need an adapter for the adapter.

I grudgingly decided to abandon the #dontBuyAnythingNew principle and ordered the blumat pressure adapter. A week later I got a notification that there will be a long delay in the delivery (aka they don't actually have it, it's just for sale on their online shop 😡), so I cancelled the order and ordered it somewhere else. (I also tried to buy it locally by actually going to a store, but it's not in stock anywhere near me.) It's supposed to arrive tomorrow.

But I learned something in the meantime. I had attached the small irrigation line that goes from the top of the ceramic cone to where you want the water to go
with a large piece of sticky tape to the side of the pot, to make it drip into the water reservoir at the bottom of the pot. After about ten days, it became loose. It started dripping a little bit to the side, then more and more. I re-attached it. Then it got completely loose, and I got to see how fast it can drip when the cone dries! 😆 That's why I want to test these things well in advance. 👍

The pepper plants in the test pot are fine and growing well. They had their first flowers and there will be tiny peppers soon🫑. The system so far does not use nearly as much water as a expected. I only refilled the bucket once.

Now that most of my plants are growing happily, my next step is to prepare an #automated #watering system.

We want to #travel in #August, so I still have about two months to figure it out and #test it thoroughly.

Last year our neighbor offered to water our #garden. What can I say, some #plants were still alive when we got back two weeks later!

I'd love to do something with an elevated #tank. But I don't have a tank, and also no good place to put it. 😆 On the other hand, #solar power will still be abundant in August, so I guess I can spare a few Watts for a #pump.

I have an old "blumat" system lying around in the attic, that's one of those with #clay cones that release water when it's dry, so I will check that out first.

I am trying to figure out a new way to water my beds. One idea was to use sweating hose, which are giving water over time to the beds, but I am not sure if this will work?

Für meinen Pflanzturm habe ich eine Bewässerungsanlage ausgedacht und montiert. Es gibt zwar eine dazu zu kaufen, aber die versprüht mit Druck Wasser, man braucht also einen Wasserhahn (Trinkwasser!) und ein Teil des Wassers geht durch Verdunstung verloren.
Zu gießen ist der Turm schwierig, entweder es läuft über die Seitenkanten oder direkt nach unten und die oberen Etagen bleiben trocken. Also habe ich gebastelt:

Here's a question for those of you with thriving houseplants - how do you maintain good soil health? I have just bought a moisture and pH meter, to discover that my soil is very wet: I've been over-watering. The plant looks a bit poorly, but I'm hoping if I let the soil dry a bit it will recover.

I'm terrible with houseplants. I don't know how people keep them; the ones I've had always die. Years ago I turned one into a balloon tree, by attaching small balloons to its branches. But this didn't please some friends, at least one of whom was terrified of balloons.

The thing is that my partner (we don't live together) has gone away for three weeks on family business overseas, leaving me to look after his houseplants, of which he has many. His plants are all very healthy and robust, and he doesn't use any sort of meter; he just waters them once a week, with a bit extra if it's been very hot.
