There was a frost overnight and it turned a bit chilly and overcast today. Went for a walk around Caldbeck a lovely picture postcard village with duckpond and sheep milling about on the common land. First stop was a short walk following the River Cald Beck to Priest’s Mill for a hot chocolate with cream of course #getoutside #caldbeck #cumbria #watermills

Want to explore the historic mills of Anglesey? I've just updated my Google Map of Anglesey Windmills, adding corn watermills, fulling and woollen mills, tidal mills and industrial/farming mills. You can see the list of mills at https://www.anglesey-history.co.uk/other-mills/ and the map of them at https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1MWpXARhESfLh_Q3l4Moe7uYZ-w8&hl=en&usp=sharing

It's always interesting to see a past #landscape through the eyes of the people who inhabited it. This beautifully drawn and painted #map shows the #bridges, #weirs and #watermills across the river #Trent between Nottingham and Newark in the early 16thC in such loving detail that one can almost imagine standing on each site with the cartographer as he sketches.
The (enlargeable) map is online at https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/map-of-the-river-trent-and-its-tributaries-between-nottingham-and-newark

> ... #watermills remained far more efficient and reliable for several decades into the #coal era, and there was never a shortage of potential sites... However rural workers who lived along England’s riverbanks were far more independent-minded and more likely to abandon the mills ..., vs. often-desperate urban workers. The latter proved far more willing to work long hours under harsh conditions in #steam-powered mills, which could be located anywhere.

We need more #energycoops. More homes and buildings with #solar panels. Smaller modified #wind turbines for use at windy homes & schools. Scalable #watermills for those near streams and creeks. Gutters with tiny spinners in them, "micro-watermills." #Photosynthetic non-toxic paint. Then, we need to use a multi-directional #distribution system to move the energy where it needs to go, storing excess in coop "battery" stations. We need #communities to #elect leaders who will make it happen. more...
