AAAS: "In Uruguay, a water crisis is upending research." 'The nation’s worst drought in nearly a century has resulted in a dramatic decline in water quality that is wreaking havoc in homes, offices, and factories—as well as in numerous laboratories.' Researchers are finding the water supply is toxic to plants, fish, + other study subjects. "A regional drought now in its third year has nearly emptied Uruguay’s reservoirs." [The photo is the dwindling reservoir behind the Paso Severino Dam]. "Despite chemical treatments, the water gained an intensely salty taste, and sodium and chloride levels exceeded what the World Health Organization considers safe for human consumption." Many members of the scientific community were not notified by the government ahead of time or prepared for the severity and rapidity of the water quality decline. 'Flavio Zolessi, a cell biologist at Udelar and the Pasteur Institute of Montevideo, says the salty water disabled both reverse osmosis purifiers and “ultrapurification” devices in his laboratory.' He has seen growth + survival problems in the fish larvae + embryos he uses to study neural cell differentiation. Climate change is beginning to trip up the march of science at a time when we really need it to solve critical problems.

@BenRossTransit “The more spaces that cities require for cars, the greater the need for cars,” because the extra lots create more distance between buildings, making those areas less walkable. Given the impact those surfaces have had on the environment, “it will be looked back on as a horrible mistake.”

“Recently, after a series of extreme heatwaves in California forced her family to run the AC, her monthly electricity costs rose to about $500. Her water bill averages around $100, but because the water is contaminated with pesticides from nearby agricultural fields, her family spends an additional $140 each month to purchase jugs of drinking water. Her grocery bills have gone up as well, after a spate of winter storms disrupted harvests across the state.”

Ofwat boss denies water industry badly regulated as he predicts higher bills | Water industry | The Guardian

He then goes on to describe a poorly regulated industry with a regulator who neither had, nor sought, appropriate powers to regulate effectively until it was far too late 🤷‍♂️
Now he wants us to trust they and their industry partners will do better in the future...
Oh, here's a big increase in your water bills, enjoy
