As we celebrate #wdpd2022, it’s important to acknowledge that despite the progress made over the last few years in terms of digital preservation advocacy & support, there are still many orgs out there with antiquated job classification frameworks that put digital preservation work in the non-tech low-skill category of work. I happen to work at one of them.

I was in grad school for audiovisual preservation (thought I was going to spend my life looking for lost prints of Metropolis or London After Midnight in closets or whatever) and instead realized that I truly didn't understand how computers worked and that was a problem for...everything (not just work but society, etc!)

just kept drifting more and more to the digital side of A/V until going full #digipres #WDPD2022

Happy World Digital Preservation Day! How did you get into #digipres ? #WDPD2022

I started in 2001 with my first digital camera. It used 3.5” floppy disks. One day I was taking pictures of friends near a pond, and oopsy! While changing out disks dropped them in water. Never got those photos back. Regardless of the water, today I don’t have ANY photos taken back then except for printed pictures shot with my 35mm Nikon.
