I listened to #CathyONeil 's #WeaponsofMathDestruction

I found O'Neil's title of the faceless #math models and algorithms affecting the lives of people as "WMDs" to be funny but fitting. Her bias is reflected but enlightening.
While I like the idea of the data scientist Hippocratic oath, I would be more excited to see algorithmic audits. I also think adding a human into AI loops could also help restore some sanity to these math models running a-muck. mathbabe.org

Facebook has a new language generation model specialized to produce scientific sounding gibberish. It seems to me the most potent way in which the model could be harmful is if it is used to produce pseudoscience for bigots. I checked and the safeguarding against this case is very bad: it took me 9 queries to get it to produce holocaust denial content

I finished reading #WeaponsOfMathDestruction and have been thinking about my duty as a #datascientist in the #healthcare industry.🏥

Models have proven over and over that they can identify people that need help. WMDs often lose focus of their impact on individual people.

Though hospital ratings provide transparency to patients, how do ratings impact people in less privileged communities? Does it help or does it harm? Does this make doctors less inclined to work at hospitals with lower ratings?⭐
