The wind is now here in #Monterey #California #WeatherObservations

A cool gray morning at #ForkedMeadow #California. It was 25f overnight and is now 28f. There might have been a small dusting of snow overnight. The next #atmosphericRiver is due soon.

There's still a lot of water flowing around including in this photo you can see a seasonal creek moving water in the foreground. It only runs for a few weeks a year after heavy rain or if there's a big, sudden melt.

The wind is fierce tonight in #Monterey #California ! Absolutely ripping through our neighborhood. The next block over already lost power and they only got it back this morning from the last storm. This wind wasn't in the forecast I looked at earlier today.

#sunrise at #ForkedMeadow #California was very pretty this morning. It went down to 16f overnight so the snowpack that became fully saturated with the last #atmosphericRiver is now one big frozen ice cube. There's still a lot of water moving down the creeks but it's starting to slack off. The next atmospheric river is due on Wednesday.

The total rainfall at #ForkedMeadow #California from the #AtmosphericRiver was 10.84" before it switched to snow. There was about 4" of snow on the tail end of the rain so we ended up with about 11" of precipitation. It is currently partly sunny and 32f. The overnight low was 28f. This storm was by far the most productive since the winter of 2012/2013. It looks like the central #Sierra gets a brief reprieve today before plunging into the next storm.

We are now at 9" of rain at #ForkedMeadow #California from this #AtmosphericRiver that started yesterday. This has been an epic deluge the likes of which we haven't seen in many years. The temperature is now dropping and is down to 36f. I expect before midnight the storm will switch to snow and then things will get really interesting. It looks like tomorrow could bring a deep freeze. Then there'll be a day pause before the next storm.

Now up to 4.5" of rain with this #AtmosphericRiver at #ForkedMeadow #California and holding at 40f.

Here's an interesting tidbit: almost no buildings in the central #Sierra have gutters. The snow rips them off in the winter and the incense cedar continually sheds debris in the summer which accumulate in gutters quickly, and provide a kindling bed for a spark. So when it rains, the water cascades off roofs. Good idea to have gravel along the dripline to prevent erosion.

We're now up to 4" of rain with this #AtmosphericRiver at #ForkedMeadow #California! This is a very moist storm. The rain is hammering on the tin roof. Sometime in the night we had a gust of wind to 15 mph which is blustery for our #AmbientWeather station where it's located in the meadow.

The current forecast is for 0.5"/hr of precipitation for much of the day with another 3-6" of #rain. The rain just picked up and is really drumming on the metal roof of the cabin. #ForkedMeadow #California is going to get soaked today! So far for December we've had over 12" of rain.

Hopefully this doesn't cause a big erosion event in the meadows. We need some #beavers to help with all of this!

So far in this latest storm from the #AtmosphericRiver hitting #California and the central #Sierra, our #AmbientWeather station at #ForkedMeadow has received 3.5" of rain. The temp is 40f. Before midnight, we had 2" of rain and another 1.5" after midnight. The snow is still hanging in there but if it doesn't go below freezing soon, I think it'll all melt away today. Elevation is 6,000' so yes this is a very warm storm!

29f and snowing hard at #ForkedMeadow #California. I wonder how long the snow will keep up until switching to rain. Or maybe we'll get lucky and it'll be only snow the next few days. If you scroll back to late last week in my toots, you'll see that the existing snow really hasn't changed much. The base pack has been tenacious so far.

The total moisture content from the last storm at #ForkedMeadow #California was just over 3.5"! It fell as mostly rain with a few inches of snow at the end. We basically lost zero of the existing snowpack so all of that moisture soaked in. The creek is a little higher but not as much as you'd expect for so much precipitation.

Meanwhile in #Monterey #California the wind has let up a little but it's still pouring. Currently it's 58f outside. It started raining about 5pm yesterday and was raining off and on all night long. Looks like we're in for at least a week of rain here. It feels like home (northwest Oregon) 🥰

So far there's 1.4" of rain at #ForkedMeadow #California from this storm. It's coming down at 0.25"/hr right now. Temp is 34f. None of the existing snow is melting. It's just soaking up all the rain. We'll see if this switches to snow at some point or not.
