The previous @fediforum unconference in March resulted in new connections, refined ideas, and more collaboration among fediverse users, operators, and developers.
I am looking forward to the next event on September 20–21. I hope to get feedback on my progress building Open Payments and Web Monetization support into the social Web.

@rwg nice title.
You mention subscriptions: if you've not already connected, linking this to @Jeremiah who is doing a lot of work atm around the fediverse and #WebMonetization, the best(/only?) cross-browser protocol for decentralised subscriptions: https://community.interledger.org/jeremiahlee/web-monetization-in-the-fediverse-ilf-grant-progress-report-1-37c7. Sadly the only WebMon service, Coil.com, stopped this year but I think the backers Interledger see this as a long-game.
There was even a PeerTube plugin (https://github.com/samlich/peertube-plugin-web-monetization) that briefly paid me real pennies per play!
Here is my mid-grant progress report for adding Web Monetization support to the fediverse. Working with @Interledger has been an incredible experience.
“#AI is killing the old web, and the new web struggles to be born. Generative AI models are changing the economy of the web, making it cheaper to generate lower-quality content. We’re just beginning to see the effects of these changes.” — James Vincent, The Verge #WebMonetization #GenerativeContent #AIContentExplosion

Today's Interledger Town Hall on #WebMonetization, reminded me why I so LOVE this community. I think it left everyone with a sense of excitement at the possibilities for shaping the future of Web Monetization in response to what we've learned over the last few years. @Jeremiah Any service has to prove its worth to its customers. For micro-payment services, people want to know what happens to their money. With Flattr, you *knew* just-about-everything you paid into it was paid out to creators, regardless of how much “content” you consumed in a month. Coil required you to spend several hours every month visiting #WebMonetization-enabled pages before even half your monthly subscription would find its way to creators.
Update: Coil has discontinued its browser extension-based micro-payments subscription service. I have no doubt its poor transparency regarding where your money went contributed to the service’s demise. 💸 #MicroPayments #CreatorEconomy #WebMonetization

@da 🤔 Coil’s privacy by design meant it could not tell you who you sent payments to. It functioned as a wallet with payouts sent to creators’ wallets as you encountered them in your browser. It used the federated Interledger payment network. Both of these were very good improvements over the original Flattr model. There was an additional add-on for client side tracking if you really wanted to know.

Very sad and confused about Coil’s announcement to shut down suddenly.
I fear the impact this will have on the #WebMonetization W3C proposal…
We've added #WebMonetization support to our podcasting platform https://medium.com/prxofficial/web-monetization-and-podcasting-850d45f27882
Imagine clicking a link, reading an ad-free news article and having your browser drop pennies or *fractions of pennies* into the outlet's online wallet as you read anonymously.
No data mining by the site or payment provider.
The ability to add an extra tip or block payment.
All without having to set up accounts or buy subscriptions. Cool, eh? Turns out a seamless browser-based #micropayment W3C API standard is being proposed and worked on.

@zaskoda @eloquence I managed to implement the proposed #WebMonetization standard from my #WordPress #blog readers https://webmonetization.org
Readers install the Coil (a WM sender) browser extension https://coil.com or use Puma Browser on mobile https://www.pumabrowser.com. Coil is $5 a month and goes to stream #micropayments via #Interledger https://interledger.org to sites that tag their pages with a valid payment pointer. WM receivers don’t have to join Coil; ILP wires them up anonymously.

@cubicgarden have you looked at @Castopod ? It has #webmonetization support, and supports audio only.
@dave @davew I like a solution like #WebMonetization https://webmonetization.org and #Interledger https://interledger.org. I set up an account through #Coil https://coil.com, writers and other creators link their sites or profiles with a bit of HTML metadata, and I pay them as I browse. Very bottom-up.
I also set it up on my own blog and other places.
You can ignore any of the #cryptocurrency options if that’s not your thing (it’s not for me either). I subscribe and get paid in dollars.

Wow, this is so cool! While I don't think videos should be paywalled, I like that you can support creators this way and you could paywall bonus chapters in a video without having to upload a separate one. Yet another nail in the coffin for #youtube!

To build an open web, paywalling educational content isn’t really an option. Ads actually work in keeping content open - but they don’t need to include tracking and targeting.
So for an alternative business model, I am combining non-intrusive ads with #webmonetization and paid membership perks. Here’s a new landing page i’ve been exploring for https://prototypr.io 👇#indieweb #webdev #design #ux
