ruins everything. See this post by @davidrevoy

When I see how psychotic people can get online I imagine a web that is open, but only to that subset of people who can be civil to each-other. Using a network, maybe it's feasible?

I started imagining this here:

olivierforget.net/blog/2020/we

I ended up with more questions than answers, but its would be worth a shot given where we end up when there is zero gate-keeping:

@schizanon I agree that more tooling is necessary to allow users to control their own feeds, the current tendency of relegating everything to server-side filtering rather than client-side ordering, sorting & muting/killing is an obnoxious departure from the traditional decentralized communication protocols.

I disagree somewhat regarding the tags, mostly because preventing dataset poisoning would require something akin to and that's complicated to ask of all to understand.

I wasn't a fan of the verified account process on Twitter but for those that were able to get verified it did help protect their brand. My hope is that the federated universe will resurrect the where we build a cryptographic trust network based upon trusting those whom we trust. Mastodon is training us a bit for this by trusting that the people we follow are following the true accounts of others we may want to follow. Just needs some tech around it to take it to the next level.

What are models for social structures for decentralized coordination, info sharing, and response to network threats, and how might we apply them to ops?

Looks, like a great concept ( anyone?) and it takes only 2.2 seconds of extra delay on a 30K node grid. That’s 30K buildings 😅

@dl It'll end up being the all over again - admins who trust other admins and base their federation on this. (Except this time the Web of Trust will have another chance at trying to work at scale.)

Blocklists will also likely become automated and synchronized, and modifying them will become based on trust as well.

Is there a web of trust approach to verify Fediverse accounts? Or has anyone tried one?

Twitter’s verification process was massively unfair to the average process. So far I am not super impressed with using real=me. I have been trying to read posts on use of and . I like this a bit better but ultimately the really needs to get behind a based solution. I have always loved the potential for WebOfTrust. Now is the time.

@hemmes @Gargron OK. But now you have to have instances that trust your instance(s) verification.

And, since the code is open, I (having mega$ ala Musk) can fire up an AWS cloud like "verified.social", charge $8/id, and send all other admins into a crisis worse than the current .

If you want a , you do NOT want to rely on any specific verification authority. You want to rely on the entities you, as a person, actually trust.

A game developer that I know on (no mockery) made the critical mistake of asking a question in public that gave me the opportunity to go on at some length about the intersection of web of trust systems and metrics alongside social media architectures.

All of you guys know that is a terrible idea. It can only end poorly.

But here we are.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.

I wonder if there have been any attempts to map terminology to common parlance, and avoid crypto terms in discussions and in software interfaces.

To attest content, the "self-attesting" key is used. Others verify your attestation on content using your published "verification" key. doesn't need to enter the discussion until a common use-case pops up.
