The donkey in Egyptian hieroglyphics was called Aa-hemet or "Eeyore"...

So that's clearly where A.A.Milne got his donkey's name from when writing the Pooh Bear stories, from the ancient Egyptians. But he didn't call Eeyore "Aa-hemet" because we are not #asscademics and don't speak ancient Egyptian. So he just used Eeyore.

Rubí in 'PPE' became used as an educational tool: the image was used in Covid safety lessons for secondary school children being taught at home in the lockdown. (The 2020 image was also used in Rubí's post yesterday.)

At the moment we seem to have Rubí in the best condition possible, but donkeys are famously 'stoic' animals. It is really hard to know when they are in pain. But Rubí is mentally very strong and she is actually the leader of the family herd.

Rubí donkey suffered from a bout of mange in 2020, and it was during the Covid lockdown, so I could not get the vet to visit. My local animal feed supplier recommended "Barricade" - a strong spray used on cattle and sheep - and the vet agreed on the phone that it would be worth trying.

For this, I had to protect her ears (kitchen gloves were an ideal solution!) and cover her eyes (my protective visor for strimming came in handy!) I added a nose mask too!

Rubí donkey also needed special dental treatment this year, carried out by my equine vet: this took an hour of work which was done under sedation. Some donkeys need dental work occasionally, but others can continue happily without needing it.

A good equine dentist can help identify and eliminate dietary problems that start with difficulties grinding forage..

Rubí donkey has started making her own contribution to #Asstodon and you may have seen her #RubíTuesbray posts, where we get some insight (?) into the imagination of a donkey.

But this little thread is about the extra care that Rubí gets. She is a donkey who needs special attention and has a rather 'gloomy' look, with her head mostly lowered. The vet suspects some spinal deformity in infancy: possibly being sat on by mother.

As we've seen, Donald McGill's seaside donkeys were mainly drawn as caricatures, but this sketch shows more natural observation.

Maybe he saw a real beach donkey that was cheekily sticking its tongue out? The sketch reminds me of my donkey Morris who always stands around with his tongue hanging out!

I had planned two more donkey postcards to end the McGill week, but they have not been popular. Maybe I'll finish with this one?

Testing Peter Markle's donkey ambulance harness in Afghanistan. (See yesterday's DotD 101).

NGO HealthProm asked women in Afghanistan how to improve health services. Many said that expectant mothers needed a better way to reach health centres. The donkey ambulance is the answer.

Little man, how am I supposed to know that this isn‘t an aggressive approach but a friendly one?

Kwiatek did this from the beginning and it took me a few days that he wants to be cuddled when he comes over like this. He will only stop when his head is presses against my stomach. It‘s a very demanding way to ask to be cuddled!
