Why are less affected by herbivores in their invaded areas compared to their native range? Article by Zoe A. Xirocostas and others like @JeffOllerton or @rr_junker - doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2023.1022. The leaf damage by herbivores on 16 invasive plants in their native range (Europe) is 6 times higher than that in their invaded range (Australia). There is no correlation with the length of time since the introduction, the climate or the size of the invaded areas.

For the theme “strangling” my gel plate prints of Vincetoxicum rossicum, also known as European swallowwort, or Dog-strangling Vine. Introduced to the NE US gardens in the mid-1800s, it’s become wildly invasive in south & central Ontario. While it doesn’t actually strangle dogs, it can be a risk to native plants and animals. It’s illegal to buy, sell, trade or purposely sell dog-strangling vine in Ontario;

Invasive species No 1 driver of biodiversity loss in Australia – and feral cats have biggest impact, report finds

"Australasia has been identified as a global hotspot for invasive species. In Australia, invasive species are the number one driver of biodiversity loss"

"Feral cats have the greatest environmental impact..."

"Australia has lost more native mammal species than any other continent, with more than 100 species listed as either extinct or extinct in the wild.'

“This report makes it clear that the Albanese government’s commitment to ‘no new extinctions’ will be no more than a slogan without increased focus and funding needed to prevent the next wave of invasive species."

“Invasive species are likely to be a primary driver of 85% of the next round of predicted vertebrate extinctions over the next 20 years"

@GMWatch can we not just learn to accept "" as being an acceptable part of our . Unless the plant is non natural invasive or can cause problems for those with mobility issues etc, rather than trying to remove them, we should learn to accept their beneficial value?

Thanks to our volunteers today at the Waikākāriki Wetland. We came very close to finishing off putting guards around all of this year's plantings that need them, just a handful to go when we are back here in a few weeks. Coming into spring there will be lots of releasing work coming up!

Frustrating to see small patches of climbing asparagus popping up around kohekohe seedlings as well. The battle never ends!

Knap Weed at sundown.

So many things, that we believe are weeds in our lives, become beautiful flowers if we let them grow.

Colours of sunrise on sheep (Rumex acetosella).
A beneficial herb slash noxious weed.
It's related to dock, a tough and that I loved to play with as a child on the farm. I would strip the plump clusters of from the stems and merrily fling them about, heedless of the havoc I was sowing.

I knew these "friendly reminders" were just a passive-aggressive way to pressure me into cutting down the HOA sees as , so I cultivated my own , so I could point to it as an example, "No, *this* is poison ivy."

Naturally the immediate response was "Well it could be poison oak."

Our wild willowherb is now taller than the fence and still blooming ferociously! It's more of a shrub than a weed now. 🌷🌺🌹⚘️🪻
