"Deacon King Kong" by James McBride is one of those rare books that you never want to end. It is so chock full of colorful characters like Sportcoat (the proverbial Deacon), Hot Sausage, Sister G, Pots, the Elephant and many more that can only all come together in the Brooklyn housing projects.
The story humorously floats along interweaving love, church, baseball, drugs, bagels, religious icons, gardening, moonshine and cheese into multiple laugh out loud moments. Perhaps the reason I love this book is because I have lived in Brooklyn (though not the projects) and I can envision all of the characters vividly in my mind, but I will more readily credit the brilliance of the author's prose.
Few #books compel me to want to read them a second time, but here I would have happily done it immediately.
