"The Secret History of Twin Peaks" by Mark Frost is a book for everyone who loved the TV series plus conspiracy theories. The history spans the centuries from the 1800's Lewis & Clark expedition to the Pacific NW to a current FBI officer (post-Dale Cooper) reviewing the case. Alien races, covert operatives & a mysterious ring are involved. Fun & slightly disturbing if you're willing to ascribe a kernel of truth to it all.

"World Gone By" is Dennis Lehane at his best, creating an intricate web of the competing black, white & Cuban underworlds in post-Prohibition Miami.
Joe Coughlin was once a working member of the Lansky-Luciano mob, but is now the consigliore making its members lots of money. Still, old friendships are fraying & it is getting harder to hold off old enemies & government intrusion, putting his talents to the test. ๐

"Robicheaux" by James Lee Burke is a good down-n-out private eye genre piece set in the Louisiana bayou. Chock full of colorful characters like a reclusive novelist, an ailing mob boss & a slick aspiring politician, in addition to the requisite femme fatale & the title character, the story nimbly weaves their faults & dreams around a sword, a movie & the death of the one responsible for Robicheaux's wife's death. Who did it? ๐

#WeekendReading was all about surface waters in the West and Mississippi delta and the engineering and ethical dilemmas of trying to control water
From NYT Mag: California built its extensive dam network in an unusually calm climate period.
Officials don't want to acknowledge projected superstorm events, problems too big to be solved.

"Babel" by R. F. Kuang is an historical fantasy set at Oxford during the height of England's colonial power. That power is reliant on the innate, latent magic of silver accessed through engraving. Within, the story touches on many themes such as alienation, imperialism, racism & corruption while following a small, diverse group of students at the school. How much are they willing to sacrifice for ideals? ๐

"Mercy Street" by Jennifer Haigh is a story that chronicles the difficulties of working at a clinic in Boston that caters to women's healthcare. Anti-abortion protesters are often on the street & it makes for a tense situation. Not all women who visit the clinic are there to terminate a pregnancy, but it is possible if that is their choice.

A great read on economics, Ostrom, and implications for democratic possibilities.

โRealism is a demand dressed up as an observation. โฆHardin didn't just claim that some commons turned tragic, he claimed that the tragedy of the commons was inevitable โ that we shouldn't even bother trying to create public goods.โ

"The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern rekindles the joy of circus wonders for every child & transplants it to adults. It is set around a rivalry between 2 magicians who match their proteges in a contest with high stakes under the venue of a circus which travels the world arriving & entertaining only at night. "Prisoners of the Castle" by Ben MacIntyre reads like a WWII prison escape movie that actually happened.
The author tells both sides of the story of Colditz Castle, the destination for captured, high-ranking & politically connected officers & previous escapees. Regardless, many escapes were attempted though social & racial biases kept that to that to white officers only. It is truly amazing the elaborate schemes that were devised. ๐
