"An unidentified artist designed this poster featuring the Leica I, the world's first small-format camera. The Leitz Optische Werke in Wetzlar, after experimenting since 1913 with small cameras that used 35mm movie film, introduced the Leica I (LEItz CAmera) to the public in 1925. I have not been able to find out exactly when this poster first appeared, but we do know that the company introduced the Leica II, the successor model to the Leica I, in 1932.

Later, during the 1930s and into WWII, Ernst Leitz II, who had headed up the development of 35mm Leica cameras, opposed the NSDAP. He worked to help persecuted people to get away from Germany and to establish new lives elsewhere - particularly in New York, where the company had its US office. Leitz's status as a well-known, innovative, internationally-successful businessman made it difficult for the Nazis to stop him."
