Perhaps a hashtag like #WelcomeWagon (or something less US-culture-specific?) — people who want to help could follow the hashtag, and it could be publicized as a place to ask your n00b questions when suggesting mastodon as a new place to check out.

Just trying to think of possibilities that use tools already built into the system.
