#Demography #WelfareState: "The world’s demographics have already been transformed. Europe is shrinking. China is shrinking, with India, a much younger country, overtaking it this year as the world’s most populous nation.

But what we’ve seen so far is just the beginning.

The projections are reliable, and stark: By 2050, people age 65 and older will make up nearly 40 percent of the population in some parts of East Asia and Europe. That’s almost twice the share of older adults in Florida, America’s retirement capital. Extraordinary numbers of retirees will be dependent on a shrinking number of working-age people to support them.

In all of recorded history, no country has ever been as old as these nations are expected to get.

As a result, experts predict, things many wealthier countries take for granted — like pensions, retirement ages and strict immigration policies — will need overhauls to be sustainable. And today’s wealthier countries will almost inevitably make up a smaller share of global G.D.P., economists say."

It's hardly possible to diverge more from my own views about Nationalisation and the creation of the #welfarestate But it's a good illustration of the very particular and personal rationales people often end up creating around their political views.

It also diverged significantly from my father's own views. He came out of boarding school with a deep, almost reflexive mistrust of the late #Imperial #establishment.

This only became more pronounced after he went to university. 35/?

👆 Mostly agree except I think they want Left-lite - most seem to like (or at least appreciate) the #WelfareState etc., especially the #NHS. It's the inherently, corruptly undemocratic nature of #FPTP ("U"K🇬🇧 & Belarus🇧🇾 remember) that keeps the #ERGNeoFascistToryParty in power; well that and their friendship with lying.

Few #Coronation events in #Scotland compared to the #Queen's coronation, but as Tom Devine points out, folk in 1953 has more to celebrate, including the end of #austerity, a booming #economy, and the start of the #NHS and the #WelfareState
