It's critical we pay attention to what our sources unintentionally show, not only to what they deliberately say.

I'm currently working on notarized credit and real estate contracts from early 19th-century #Wendake, the #Wendat community just outside of #Québec City. Virtually none of the men, whether settler or #Indigenous, whose names the notary and the law put front and center, ever signed their these contracts. Au lieu de dépeindre les Wendats sur la galerie de la maison, le dessinateur les transpose dans un environnement qui s'accorde davantage aux stéréotypes.

An aerial view of our excavations at a 16th century Wendat-Anishnaabe village in the Kawartha Lakes, north of Toronto. Taken in 1977, as we finished up after one-and-a-half seasons of work. Outlines of some of the 20+ longhouses we discovered are visible as narrow trenches we excavated to trace their walls (visible as rows of dark post stains in the sand).

In 1703, Kandiaronk, Chief of the Native American Wendat people, laid down this argument against the Western world, and I can't help think that this man, despite rejecting Christianity at the time, was closer to the Bible's teaching regarding money than we have ever been.
