This is part of the control room during the operation of experimental #fusion reactor #Wendelstein7X. You see mostly screens used by so called “diagnosticians”. These are people which either measure plasma parameters or change the plasma properties, e.g. plasma density or temperature with their devices. Typically you need a couple dozens of clever physicists, engineers and technicians to operate an experimental reactor.

#wendelstein7x managed to stabilize the plasma for 8 minutes continuously. The #Stellarator design seems to gain significant advantages over the #Tokamak.

Another small win for #opensource tools like #grafana:
My supervisor at the #wendelstein7x #fusion experiment and I successfully used Grafana and #timescaledb to implement logging and monitoring of the new arc detection system, and the ease of use and rich set of plotting tools are quickly becoming important parts of interfacing with the system.

They now officially handed out the task of building a permanent adapter between Grafana and their internal timeseries database, ArchiveDB, to be able to use it for even more systems!

He lives with a mate and probably one child from the last year, and the three already recognize us and are eager to nom on peanuts whenever we're around.

The last two weeks at the reactor will be spent documenting them, making sure others can work with them, doing more in-depth tests etc.

But we allowed ourselves a bit of #grafana as a treat - improving the trigger settings of the devices and making sure that any faults pop up nice and clear :>
