Went out of the #VermontFlooding zone for a few days only to find some extremely harrowing white knuckle road conditions under tornado warnings and flash floods in NH 😨 heard there that #FEMA hasn’t approved a disaster recc for our county while designating six others🖕then got home to see that the distro we started setting up right before I left is now fully stocked from food, clothes, ppe and every kind of soap and brush down to mold remediation printouts and narcan 🥰#ClimateDiary #WeProtectUs

Security Culture

A security culture is a set of customs shared by a community, whose members may be targeted, designed to minimize risk.

Having a security culture in place saves everyone the trouble of having to work out safety measures over and over from scratch, and can help offset paranoia and panic in stressful situations.

The difference between protocol and culture is that culture becomes unconscious, instinctive, and thus effortless; once the safest possible behaviour has become habitual for everyone in the circles in which you travel, you can spend less time and energy emphasizing the need for it, or suffering the consequences of not having it, or worrying about how much danger you’re in, as you’ll know you’re already doing everything you can to be careful.

Key Points:

Be aware of the reliability of those around you, esp those with whom you might collaborate with

Learn and abide by the security expectations of each person you interact with, and respect differences in style.

Let others know exactly what your needs are when it comes to security.

Look out for other people.

Security culture is a form of etiquette, a way to avoid needless misunderstandings and potentially disastrous conflicts.

Security culture is a way to avoid unhealthy paranoia by minimizing risks ahead of time.

Don’t let suspicion be used against you.

Always be prepared for the possibility that you are under observation, but don’t mistake attracting surveillance for being effective.

Security culture involves a code of silence, but it is not a code of voicelessness.

A church hosting a family-friendly drag event with support from community defenders successfully repel christian fascists and proud boys in Portage, MI (Southwest Michigan about two hours from Detroit in one direction and two hours from Chicago in the other) yesterday in under 24-48 hours of notice of possible danger. A brief scuffle reportedly broke out leading to the immediate arrest of a chud that assaulted someone. Chuds then exchanged words across the street, got bored, tried to leave but their car wouldn’t start and then had to get a jump from a sympathetic chudmate before leaving the scene in disgrace. Clergy, nonprofit event hosts, and community allies vastly outnumbered the fash. The event continued uninterrupted as scheduled.

Also be on the lookout for night time or early morning driveway drops. These nazis like to throw little bags with antisemitic flyers inside. Or they may be distributing something labeled “anti-groomer action” which targets our LGBTQ residents.
