One of my favourite memorials on the #WesternFront is the Brooding Soldier. In 1920 the Canadian Battlefield Monument Commission ran a competition seeking designs to commemorate Canadian sacrifice across sites on the WF - Allward’s Vimy Ridge design won & this design by Frederick Chapman Clemesha came second. It is situated at St Julien, near to where the first major chlorine gas attack by the German army took place in April 1915

My MA thesis combined #MilitaryHistory and #AnimalHistory. It was titled ‘The Equine Learning curve’ and focused on the work of #Mules and #Horses in the British Army’s transport services on the #WesternFront during the #FirstWorldWar. #Histodons
