At the #peacecongress of #Westphalia most diplomats lamented the rain. The papal mediator, Fabio Chigi, did not only recorded in his diary, when it rained. He even wrote a poem on the weather in Münster, calling the city “home of the clouds”.
He was not the only diplomat who constantly complained about the bad weather in #Westphalia.
Maybe only those who could complain about the weather in Münster were real #diplomats at the #WestphalianPeaceCongress?

#Emdiplomats had to ensure that there was enough good wine, even in remote places such as #Münster & #Osnabrück for the #WestphalianPeacecongress. Of course this made #alcohol a good #gift + a way of discreet bribery. Moreover, it seems that there were quite a lot of #diplomats that drank too much. This could lead to delays in the negotiations because of hangovers. Other diplomats tried to use this to their advantage to extract information from the drunken diplomat. (2/3)

Today's #emdiplomacy reading recommendation is a classic from the 1980s: Franz Bosbach's The costs of the #WestphalianPeacecongress (in German). It doesn't necessary look like it, but its really fascinating. Although he called it a structural history, it has so much about the #emdiplomats' daily life and is a real treasure trove for questions of cultural history. Moreover, we still don't know much about the financial side of #emdiplomacy.

Thus, a special case – congress diplomacy – is used to form theories for the investigation of the rule case.
