Getting tired of British people still thinking is a “good thing” because they will have warmer weather.

People will die.
They’ll boil alive.
The suffering and misery will be horrific.

Once the ecosystem collapse starts, a lot of people will starve as well.

So fuck your idiot fantasies of a nice day by the beach.

Go boil in the sea, with the sewage you flushed into it.

(Apologies to those of you who do actually care about this mess)

@aeris

is in hot water as rise, threatening the state's

"Record ocean heating has invaded Florida with a vengeance.

"Water temperatures in the mid-90s (mid-30s Celsius) are threatening delicate coral reefs, depriving swimmers of cooling dips and adding a bit more ick to the Sunshine State's already oppressive summer weather. Forecasters are warning of temperatures that with humidity will feel like 110 degrees (43 degrees Celsius) by week's end.

"The that baked and for much of the early summer has oozed its way to Florida with sunshine, little to no cooling clouds or rain, but humidity worsened by the hot oceans.

"If that's not enough, Florida is about to get a dose of from Africa's desert that's likely to hurt air quality."

Really amazed that with all this talk of in there has been almost no mention at all of the . This is the temperature where people become unable to sweat to cool down. It's related to humidity but next few days these will be a real issue particularly in tourist areas of and . The first chapter of gives a graphic description of a event in .. not an easy read but sadly a taste of things to come with . This graph show the risks from temperature and humidity.

Why can be so dangerous and why it’s getting worse

On average, nights are warming faster than days in most of the United States, a national climate assessment found.

By Rachel Ramirez, CNN, Jun 30, 2023

"Summers are getting hotter than ever, shattering all-time high temperature records, straining the energy grid and damaging critical infrastructure.

" also are coming to include another increasingly dangerous element: overnight temperatures that don’t cool down enough to offer sufficient reprieve from stifling heat, particularly for people without access to .

“'Most people don’t realize that hot nighttime temperatures have been outpacing daytime temperature increases across most populated regions worldwide in recent decades,' Columbia University’s Data Science Institute postdoctoral research scientist Kelton Minor told CNN.

“'We think it’s because as the days grow warmer, there is more moisture in the air that traps the heat,' the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health’s executive director, Lisa Patel, told CNN. 'During the day, that moisture reflects the heat, but at night, it traps the heat in.'

nighttime heat is even more common in because of the effect, in which areas are significantly hotter than their surroundings.

"Places with a lot of , , buildings and absorb more of the sun’s heat than areas with ample , and -lined streets. At night, when temperatures are supposed to cool down, the retained heat is released back into the air, said University of Washington climate and health expert Kristie Ebi.

"Areas with a lot of – with grass and trees that reflect sunlight and create shade – are cooler on summer’s hottest days, she said.

“'Many cities put together , but people have to know where they are, how to get to them and what hours they operate,' Ebi told CNN, noting city officials must rethink to consider ."

Apparently, fatal temperatures are predicted tomorrow along the lower half of the Mississippi River.

Many people cite a 95F wet-bulb theoretical limit for human survival, but recent actual human subject data suggests even young, healthy subjects will die at 31°C wet-bulb, or 87°F at 100% humidity. (Vulnerable people will die at lower temperatures.)

If this coincides with power outages (*cough* Texas), mass casualties could result.

I'm curious how accurate the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature is in the NOAA model. 95F is about the limit of human beings without A/C. digital.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/

Here in Alaska, I was chatting with my bank teller who said he just moved here from Missouri. He moved before Missouri became unlivable due to and temperatures.

So apparently the leading edge of climate migration in the US is already underway.

kills.

Too much heat paired with too much humidity => humans cannot shed heat through sweating fast enough. Heat stroke and death result.

"Wet-bulb temperature" measures the mix of heat and humidity in direct sun. The number to watch: 95 degrees F/35 degrees C wet-bulb.

temps are an issue.

Even the US National Weather Service is starting to track on their experimental digital forecast (dropdown menu)

@pvonhellermannn My least favorite time of year in was when it was hot, usually for a few days in July & August. Pretty much the only thing to do (other than A/C) was to sit under the oaks. Definitely too hot to outside in the sun at midday.

Grateful everyday that we were able to leave, it was bad enough 20 years ago.

The irony of the capital of the global oil & gas industry potentially being the first place to experience just makes me sad for average people there.

@MurmeltHier thank you for this link. According to my weather app (which may be wrong, of course) it’s going to be 40°C around 4pm local time in Houston today. If still 80% humidity that is - and even more worrying if in fact 32°C already potentially v serious. @JustCelia are there warnings and support? (Apologies, it’s unhelpful to spread panic from so far away, but really am concerned.)

i am no expert but isn’t the combination of very high temperatures and high humidity in getting very close to conditions? (Werbukb, shen guman bidy cannot cope, is 35°C at 100% humidity. Texas looks like it will be 39°C at 75%+ humidity later today). Plus widespread power outages ( i think). Seems v worrying. Take care everyone.

Meanwhile scraps mandatory water breaks for construction workers.

How extreme heat and high wet-bulb temperatures kill people. Wet-bulb temperature is a measure of heat stress that combines air temperature and humidity. It is the lowest temperature that can be reached by evaporating water. When wet-bulb temperature exceeds 35°C, the human body cannot cool itself by sweating and can suffer from fatal heat stroke. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of such deadly conditions.
