I'm curious how accurate the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature is in the NOAA model. 95F is about the limit of human beings without A/C. #WGBT #WetBulb #NWS #NOAA #prediction #LAwx #TXwx https://digital.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/

#ASC23 Next up is Chloe Brimcombe highlighting issues around developing a heatwave early warning system. These include that #WGBT is mainly calculated on healthy military men, it is not well observed (often calculated) and also that in cooler countries #heatwaves are a "fun" thing (ice cream, beach days etc) as highlighted by Saffron O'Neill
Nitty-gritty helping to save lives.
"[WGBT] calculation has historically relied on globe thermometer and wet bulb temperature observations, which are however not widely available. This has made WBGT difficult to calculate and meant approximations have been created. Here we formulate a new WBGT method that can be used with global gridded data that are freely available and we compare it against other methods in common use."
Favorably.
