Rather large sea worms are invading Whakaraupō.

Since 2020 Mediterranean fanworms up to half a metre long have spread through Lyttelton harbour. With no natural predator, the worms suffocate biodiversity. They've been detected at Corsair and Cass Bays. Eradication is the most desirable option.

The invasion has also sparked calls for better hull cleaning facilities and tighter regulations.
