Whitby Bells is a contemporary folk song written by the late Dave Totterdell. The song tells the story of the bells of Whitby Abbey which were removed at the Dissolution. The ship taking the bells to London inexplicably sank in Saltwick Bay, and it is said that the submerged bells can still sometimes be heard ringing.

Saturday’s . , the "father of English poetry” is remembered today. Bede says he was an illiterate cowherd who received a divine gift of song at Hild’s monastery at and famed for the “Song of Caedmon”, perhaps the earliest surviving poem in Old English. He died after 680.

Here are the ruins of the later Benedictine ‬⁩, approached from the sea. For centuries it has been a landmark for seafarers, standing like a sentinel on the cliffs above the harbour.

Whitby Abbey founded in 657 AD by Oswy, King of Northumbria. He appointed Hilda (feast day today) as the founding abbess. Here the Synod of Whitby took place to decide whether the Northumbrian church would follow Celtic or Roman practice.
