At 3.37, the camera pans back to Hasan, who is smiling broadly and who says,

"Ah, yes, loving the bible so much you can't even give a quote from it, and that's the guy they choose to follow."

Then he points to the recent CBS/YouGov poll showing Trump voters by far trust Trump more than friends, family, conservative media, or religious leaders.

Mehdi Hasan reports on how the white evangelical love affair with Trump is only getting worse. An amusing section of the clip reprises the 2015 interview Mark Halperin did with Trump about Trump's favorite bible verses — which Trump refused to name (and clearly could NOT name). But not whit of this fazes his bible-loving white evangelical fan base. This section begins at 3.00 and ends at 3.37.

In addition, Edsall reports that young voters are trending more Democratic and progressive.

So why have Democrats not attained majority status? The answer, scholars Edsall consulted tell him, is white backlash. The more whites and Christians recede as the dominant group in the population, the stronger their backlash, and their determination to use the Republican party to stop change.

Thomas Edsall looks at the shift taking place in the US electorate. In 2012, white evangelicals and the religiously unaffiliated were the same percentage of the population. In 2022, evangelicals had falen to 13.6% and the religiously unaffiliated were 26.8%

White evangelicals retain great political power, however, since they vote at high rates, a key factor in the Trump era.

Alberta writes:

"It’s one of the defining political statistics of the current political era: Trump carried 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016, according to exit polling, and performed similarly in 2020. But the real measure of his grip on this demographic was seen during his four years in office:"

Tim Alberta thinks white evangelicals are ready to ditch Trump. I think Tim Alberta doesn't understand evangelicals. As he himself says, though evangelicals are grousing that Trump blamed them for the GOP's poor 2022 performance, everyone he interviewed for his article including kingmaker Tony Perkins said that they will stick by their man if Trump is the candidate.

5. "In terms of its racial and religious composition, the Democratic Party looks like 20-year-old America, while the Republican Party looks like 80-year-old America."

6. "The continued demographic decline makes it clear that the MAGA goal of reestablishing their vision of a white Christian America can’t be realized by democratic means."

Robert P. Jones offers an important report of PRRI's just-released RRI Census of American Religion. Some key takeaways:

1. It "confirms that the decline of white Christians (Americans who identify as white, non-Hispanic and Christian of any kind) as a proportion of the population continues unabated."

2. "in the last ten years, white evangelical Protestants have experienced the steepest decline."

These PRRI findings tell us several things:

1. Cruelty is the point. Knowing that you are discriminating against a vulnerable group, owning the discrimination, but exulting in it is a demonstration of cruelty and of your "right" to be cruel.

2. This is about power over others. It is about choosing vulnerable communities to attack to demonstrate your clout — and to make you feel better about who you are.

3. This is weaponizataion of religion.

A majority of white evangelical Protestants (75%) favor laws that would require transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond to their sex at birth yet more than half of white evangelical Protestants (51%) believe that transgender people face a lot of discrimination.

These PRRI findings tell us several things, I think:

Mithani and Rodriguez quote Melissa Deckmann of PRRI which just issued a national report showing stronger majority support of abortion than ever:

“Most Americans don't think we should ban abortion, but yet, we're in a situation where state legislatures have done that very thing.”

Philip Elliott writes,

"For decades, it was widely accepted that Christians were the main driver behind the anti-abortion rights movement, and there were plenty of reasons to posit that. But PRRI’s new survey says white evangelical Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Latter-day Saints, and Hispanic Protestants are the lone blocs who don’t have majority support for abortion rights."

As Brownstein notes, the recent PRRI/Brookings report on white Christian nationalism "found that huge majorities of those non-college White evangelical Republicans express many of the cultural and racial anxieties Trump has tapped throughout his political career."

The latest PRRI/Brookings poll shows that Trump’s favorability rating is a “striking 17 percentage points higher among the non-college white Republican evangelicals than among those with a degree.”

Ronald Brownstein writes,

"Probably the biggest surprise in Trump’s march to the GOP nomination in 2016 was the large number of votes he attracted among White evangelical Christians, who many analysts expected to resist a twice-divorced New Yorker who had earlier expressed support for abortion rights.

If anything, those blue-collar evangelical Christians may be even more important to Trump’s prospects in 2024."

Jeff Brumley succinctly sums up the key finding of the PRRI/Brookings report on white Christian nationalism published this week:

"New research shows white evangelical Protestants and Republicans are increasingly embracing the ideology of Christian nationalism at much higher rates than the general U.S. population."

PRRI/Brookings find that nearly two-thirds of white evangelical Protestants are white Christian nationalists, as does a majority of Republicans.

As I read this report, I think of passages in Charles Marsh's book Strange Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Because Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran theologian, Marsh focuses on how the Lutheran church in Germany responded to Hitler. (Much that he says can also be said of Catholics.)

"This is a marked contrast from the 1 in 10 Americans as a whole who adhere to the tenets of Christian nationalism and the 19% who are sympathetic."

The survey finds that white evangelical Protestants are significantly more supportive of Christian nationalism than any other group.
