@JetlagJen

My views on how "some" think about are generally limited to what l read on social media. Maybe more of the public has "woken up" to the threat of climate change.

But, l live in a society, a county, where local people burn coal, wood, kerosene, diesel, petrol, etc. Plus the national gov wants to open a mine in (apparently many locals support that) & is planning on drilling for more North Sea oil & gas.

It's what they do & don't do, that matters.

Why did the government promote Whitehaven Coal Mine ahead of better alternative long-term investments? Tom Hardy investigates.

Love (absolutely hate) that new coal mines(!!) get willingly greenlit and receive police enforcement regardless of local wishes, whereas new solar farms that don't involves wrecking homes get a bunch of whipped-up nimbyism and quietly advised against and shelved by the govt (prediction) carboncommentary.com/blog/2023

The Conservative Party (UK government) plans to open a coal mine in , , should be regraded as criminal (but their the government).

Science says we must stop burning coal etc. Many locations, including Cumbria - are experiening the effects if change (e.g., more flooding). Opening a mine is evidence of the Conservative Party's association's with the fossil fuel industries (I.e., they're evidently corrupt & it shows).

"“I think the government underestimates people’s grasp of the nature of the climate crisis that we are living in, to be honest. I do think that you need to recognise that nearly every town in Cumbria has suffered flooding"

I think some of the Conservative "higher ranking" politicians know about the threats of the climate crisis. As do the Fossil fuel industries (own memo's). They do it anyway (invest in infrastructure, etc, that degrades & pollutes the environment)

The Conservatives are part of the Fossil fuel extraction self protect racket.

Just back from the protest in . Spoke to many folk and discovered there’s more common ground than we might think.

I’m sure some cracks have been healed today between those for and against the coalmine — not least as locals seem to want *jobs* more than the coalmine itself.

All-in-all, empowering and thought-provoking.

I’ve made sound recordings too, which I’ll share soon…stay tuned!

An impressive view in the Lake District National park (10/12/22), Cumbria, UK. The valley below is called St. Johns in the vale.

However, there is nothing saintly about the valley.

The valley below is in a (generally) "sheep-wrecked" condition - ecologically degraded and drained farmland. The majority of standing trees in the area are conifer tree plantations.

All the farms in the valley burn woodfuel & or coal to heat their homes. Many people in the nearby villages burn woodfuel & coal to heat their homes. Many of their homes are poorly insulated - drafty old buildings that take a lot of energy to heat during the winter.

Approximately 30 km South West (To the right & over the distant mountains) is the town of . Whitehaven is where the UK's (The Party) is planning to open a coal mine.

Some people have said, to paraphrase "what will they do with this coal? because many steel manufacturers are converting to electrical methods!".

The government (in partnership with their industrial associates) will sell some of the coal to the local people of Cumbria - people who heat their houses using victorian age technologies. That's not because they're forward-looking people. And that's why they vote for the outdated forms of, fossil fuel promoting, "business as usual", ecocidal politics.

However, the truth (evidence), has the potential to liberate the local communities. To clear up their local air and have affordable electricity so as to heat their (modernized) homes (e.g., using heat pumps)

@centralbylines @northeastbylines I spent my lunchtime writing a letter about this to Mr Gove with some pointed questions and asking that he reverse the decision. If nothing else it makes me feel a smidge better, while theoretically helping to show our disgust, and enabling the Royal Mail to pay posties properly (and using up my barcodeless stamps while I can!). If enough others do it, he might even be told we have done so!

Michael Gove has approved the first new UK coal mine in 30 years despite concern about its climate impacts among Conservative MPs and experts. Hannah Miller did this for about 30 seconds from my house 😄. I think it's great news for us who live in . The protestors of mostly don't live here but are happy to drive their cars across the country to complain.

We need jobs and money in this town, so little of both and families need both to survive really.

“The government said the mine was possible within the UK’s climate legislation, which requires the UK to reach net zero emissions by 2050, as operations will shut down by 2049”

Are you fucking kidding me?!!!
