As a white male I have always been mindful of the way women and #BIPOC suffer discrimination. I've done my best to be an ally, to be present, to be available, and to be a true witness.

For over a decade I lived in one of the most multiracial boroughs in London (one of two areas in the UK where 'White British' is a racial minority), and worked as a community organiser helping people in practical ways from this diverse community; my neighbours, friends, or those who needed me - whatever their background, whatever colour their skin.

I always thought I had a fairly good grip on #WhitePrivelege - and within the context of the UK that was probably true. I was aware that the American context was very different: the long yoke of slavery, and the preponderance of guns, making for a more highly charged dynamic.

Having said that, nothing prepared me for the personal stories contained in the linked podcast. Listening to this brings me to tears every time. The reality of being subjected to #racism as quotidian - and the extent of precautionary measures these podcasters took in their daily lives was deeply shocking to me - and by virtue of their successes, this is a group of *relatively privileged* black persons.

I was (and am) thankful to @acedtect for putting this together, and to the contributors for speaking their true life experiences of being black in the USA. Years on from the George Floyd killing, I return to listen to this from time to time. It keeps my eyes and ears open to reality.

This is not said to make white people feel guilty about their privilege. It’s not your fault you were born with white skin and experience these privileges. BUT, whether you realize it or not, you DO benefit from it, and it IS your fault if you don’t maintain awareness of that fact.

I was brought up by racists and although I'm morally opposed to racism, it is naturally interlocked with #privelege #WhitePrivelege, and to really really face ones [unintentional] racist behaviour down, one needs to unpack that precious little box of privilege that nobody can take away until black lives really matter.
