July 1975, a two-story outhouse, Whittier Manor per the sign, in Whittier. Presumably a novelty, but you can never discount Alaskans, and there have been real, functional two-story outhouses. Buckner Building in background. Via Anchorage Museum.

June 1985, vehicles loaded onto Alaska Railroad flat cars to be shuttled through the Whittier Tunnel (aka Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel) to Whittier. The ARR began offering this service in the mid-1960s. The tunnel opened to vehicle traffic in 2000.

Mid-1940s western entrance to the Whittier Tunnel (aka Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel) in Alaska. Construction began in 1941. Holes on either side were connected in 1942, and the tunnel was completed in 1943. Via Anchorage Museum.
