Today in bad phrases: #wickedproblems. It's a navel-gazing abstraction that points AWAY from fixing things by whisking the agents out of view.

What would be more helpful to observe is that several individuals or collections of individuals have set up a mutual defense arrangement, where attacking one brings in a full-on defense from partners in the arrangement.

This framing now suggests a strategic approach more like a multiple-front war, which means planning resources for those fronts.

“The sheer scale of the task, I pointed out to Kathleen, is why we’d barely made a dent in reducing global emissions despite three decades of effort and concern.”

(Yes, and also the decades of deception, denial, and delay, led by fossil fuel rentiers and the political systems they’ve essentially bought to subsidize and reinforce their power.)

“I am an engineer. I’ve been trained to solve problems. And I’ve spent more than a decade thinking about the climate problem.”

(Ah, okay. Could it be that assuming energy transition is solely or even mainly an engineering problem is an obstacle here? It is absolutely a cultural, social, and political problem - we’re dealing with disagreements about what constitutes a good life, the relative value of current and future lives and quality of life, and the relative value of the planetary biosphere in relation to humanity. None of those are remotely so narrow and simple as “engineering problems”)

New research grant: Yesterday @Formas granted us (Mikael Karlsson (PI), Daniel Linnvall and Kirsti M. Jylhä) SEK 3 million to study climate change and Covid-19 and compare how these two crises have been handled by society. We will approach the issue through conversations with a range of actors within authorities, politics and the media, as well as through attitude surveys and discussions with groups of citizens.

I would like to see more #Being, #Thinking, #Relating, #Collaborating, and #Acting in #Synergy to overcome our joint #WickedProblems. I teach #Meditation, #RiskManagement, #ProjectManagement, #ChangeManagement, #InformationSecurity, and read and watch movies.

It was getting shouty for a bit there. Hopefully everyone feels like they've had their chance to express their personal views, and in the process many have heard something of each other's. Some attempts at broader, perhaps even deeper, contributions have started to emerge. Can we calm and quiet it down now, accept social, community, existence is imperfect, and see how things evolve? Or is that mere suggestion an affront to big voices?

I've just moved here from aus.social to be with my spatial peeps, so another #introduction is in order.

I'm a #fullstack #remotesensing #scientist working across #optical #sar and #lidar domains. With a background in #rangeland and #savanna #ecology, I build biophysical models using empirical and #machinelearning methods to get information back to the government, NGOs and the public.

Now getting more interested in applying #spatialscience to #systemsthinking for tackling #wickedproblems.
