From what I saw, you didn't put in an effective break between the #pond's soil and surrounding soil.
This way you probably rather created a water reservoir for the surrounding #WickingBed. By capillary action, the soil will suck water from the pond. This will worsen with plants growing in.
We had the same problem with our 1st pond that was sucked dry. A shame, most gardening TV programmes build ponds this way.
