Mike’s Victorian Trivia: After Lincoln’s 1860 speech against slavery and for the right of workers to strike, 5 store clerks started an abolitionist Republican paramilitary called the Wide Awakes. They acted like political police at rallies, marched in uniforms, armed & sometimes fought street battles.
The South viewed the Wide Awakes as the North's private army and created the Minutemen in response. Their duty was to arm, equip & be ready for any emergency. The fear of the Wide Awakes resulted in Minutemen companies forming all over the South. Like their enemy, they too held torch rallies and wore their own uniforms.
