I’ve a great story for #WidlifeWins this #Sunday!

Today is all about rivers and how one particular #river was revitalised with life after work was carried out to ‘rewiggle’ the river to better reflect it’s natural trajectory.

The river in question is Swindale Beck. Two centuries ago, local residents straightened the river to speed the flow of water and to increase the amount of farmland around it. However, this move had unintended consequences and resulted in the river flowing too quickly for #salmon and #trout to spawn.

Fortunately in 2016, the RSPB (and its partners), began a project to reintroduce the natural curves of the river and within three months of doing so both salmon and trout were recorded as having spawned there again.

It was an expensive project and highlights the drastic impacts humans have had on nature through environmental change but also demonstrates that such impacts can be reversed and we can help #nature thrive again!
