With modern screens and editors, >80 isn't really a problem for most. Black defaults to 88; I happen to like 96. A company I work for has standardized on 120, which IMHO is too wide.
Pick something you like, configure black/your editor/etc to observe it, and be consistent, and you'll be fine.

We previously found in 1D simulations (blue) that the #positional #error of #Dpp increases as the pouch of the #Drosophila #wingdisc expands over time.
Now, with a #tissue #width of 10 cells, the positional error is substantially reduced and remains below 1 cell diameter (red)

I don't think Mastodon has done anything *wrong* in their current definition of what constitutes a hashtag: in lots of situations, you probably want colon or hash to end a tag, as when you express a #height:#width ratio or #stack#multiple#tags. It's just that the way things are doesn't work for DOIs.
