I'm feeling pretty validated in my winter-sheltering tactics right now, though in all honesty I was haphazard in covering everybody from frost, and I suspect the real labour here is done by my microbes. setting up soil-life-friendly gardening pots constantly shocks me with how powerful the plants get.

I only plant winterhard local flora outside btw, I have no idea where this Clitoria ternata came from or how she ended up in my balcony pots. I look forward to blue tea nonetheless

what to do when the nights are under 0º for a week straight: blankets! for plants!! every day I take them out in the morning so they can enjoy this strange week of cold temperatures but bright sun. every night I put the blankets back on, to protect the new growth from the frost. bit of work but worth it for my babies! things you have to do after a false spring.

we're getting insects too, hopefully the shelter is useful for any resident guests.

Ideas for gardening zines: I think it would make more sense to keep it short and focused rather than trying to write a textbook. Example concepts:

* "Microbes are comrades: How to have literally trillions of pets and garden better by doing nothing"
* "Don't preserve Mother Nature, hook up with her she's a milf: #WildGardening as loving relationships"

and for my last plant photo of the year, in the depths of the winter solstice, I would like to post the Last Bee.

she's probably not like, literally the last, but it sure felt that way. she visited us on November 28, before the frost, still braving the weather, but worn down by the cold rain. she chose to rest her tired wings under the mighty leaves of bae's borage, still in bloom. she chose to sleep with us, just for one night. and she never woke up.

it's been a full year where my balcony was buzzing with nonstop bee-flower sex, from February to November. many hives will remember the path here. the plants that died, having been *throughly* fertilised, will have dropped seeds. the pots, never treated with herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides of any kind, inoculated with microbes from my worms and free from chemical fertiliser, will be thriving with invisible life, already adapted and expectant for more wild plants.

next year, let's have even more bees in my balcony! we can't single-handledly reverse the insect apocalypse, but for the bees that honour us by coming to my apartment, our flowers matter ❤️
