River in spate after a heavy downpour. I am very fortunate to have a wildflower meadow which runs along the bank of this splendid river. When the water level is lower I can see small salmon swimming and rising for flies.

I took the lawn mower to the #WildflowerMeadow project this week. Trying to let let light to the soil to aid germination of the sowed #wildflower seed over the Spring. Once established I might not have to mow in winter/spring
as much in future years, and will leave areas for #insects

@nicole2g I am surrounded by #vineyards that plow their fields (instead of mowing) blowing away tons of top soil each year. We have brought in tons of fine bark/compost and have over 20 #nativeoaks (Live Oaks) where there were none. And a mostly native #FieldOfDreams #wildflowermeadow

Yesterday we got back from a mini holiday. First thing I did was run out to My #FieldOfDreams and the seedlings I hoped were Nemophila menzen (Baby Blue Eyes) had some grue leaves and they did and I can confirm they are. Simple pleasures. @satyale you may want to check out a couple of hastags #wildflowermeadow and my own #FieldOfDreams i have 1/4 to 1/3 acre of handweeded mostly CA poppies and Arroyo Lupine and Red Maids. All natives. I worked hard the last couple months removing bindweed, filigrees, foxtails and burr clover. If you are looking fir a fine leaved fairly short annual grass I use Zorro fescue. Its not native but it plays well with others. Merry Christmas #gardening

Covered in frost. CA poppies, Arroyo Lupine, Red maids, hopefully some baby blue eyes really good crop of 1st 2 thus year. A couple of Native Live Oaks. Find myself acting like a madman bending over peering into grass for signs of new wildflower life.

@cohanf @plants just spebt another 2 hours weeding the undesirable exotics in favor of lupine and poppies. The Lupine last a few weeks but CA poppies are perennials. We mow to a few inches and the bloom from Spring through fall. I don't mind the transient nature of the #wildflowers #wildflowermeadow #FieldOfDreams

Mown again with lawnmower, 60 m2 area raked hard to gain bare soil and sown with locally collected #wildflower seed.
Slightly acid soils so some acid loving wildflowers sown.

1. Late March 2022, Rank Bulbous False oat #Grassland

2. Late March, mown with #Scythe, arisings removed & mown again with lawnmower. All cuttings removed

3. Early July. False oat Grassland. Height without dense thatch beneath. Rankness removed.
#Ringlet #Butterflies loved it

4. Early July. Mown (method as in 2), to reduce grass vigour & soil Nutrients. Sadly this would have affected the ringlets. But the aim long term is to increase #Wildflowers

Nice to finish my last hay cut of the year - a #wildflowermeadow that I created 12 years ago and has over half the breeding population of the British butterflies recorded in just one acre. This used to be a potato field. Now it’s an oasis for #wildlife. #wildlifegarden
