There is a workshop coming up in early sept with the amazing duo from Terra Ignis Fermentation Collective.
Ignore the "smoke your own fish", it's all about wild fermented soft drinks...lemonade with a regional accent! And very affordable at only €50.
Check it out :)

The wonderfully named deceiver. Laccaria laccata. Mildly mushroomy, when you find it you often get enough such that their small size doesn't matter. Tasty and useful, plentiful wild mushroom.

Suillellus luridus, having a good season in Cambridge. Tasty when well cooked, superb when dried.

Xerocomellus chrysenteron. Not rare. Not exotic. Not hard to ID. And not highly sought after but delicious, useful, and worth picking if you have the right recipes for them. Commonly called pink cracking boletes. Really frequent suburban mushroom, I might just find quite a lot in a short scoot round on the bike later.

A short ride from home. Pleurotus cornucopiae. Quite often when you find it, you really do find it.

Mushroom alert: Cape Town. Now around pine trees, boletus is recognisable by a sponge-like under-surface (spore tubes instead of gills). Cut off stalk bases; remove pine needles, grass blades etc. by hand - don't wash. Fry with salt & onion (& garlic & black pepper if available).

will become soon 🥰

are a major for - can be dried & made into cakes. Fruit leathers can be made by blending berries & spreading flat in a pan & drying in sun or oven. Berries can also be used to create a dark blue or purple dye. Branches & leaves of salal are used to line cooking pits & provide flavour. Leaves are used to cover cuts and wounds.

Blackberries are coming. The first buds are just forming. I know they're invasive, and since I started managing this piece of land, I've cut them back a little farther each year. But a weed that feeds me, that in fact refuses to stop feeding me free food, wanting no water or fertilizer or anything, is a pretty great weed to have.

Mushrooming. Golden morels, bell morels, summer oysters, St. George's mushrooms (best of them all) and dryads saddle. And a few wild herbs (fennel, cow parsley, garlic mustard, wild allium) for a mushroom risotto tonight.

What's happening? An excellent saffie season is what's happening. Just harvested about 10% of what we walked past.

Hey folks, it's mushroom season 🍄

Remember our ancestors went through a lot of trouble to figure out what mushrooms we can and can't eat. Respect their efforts and do your homework before foraging. Field mushrooms are the easiest ones to get wrong!

Get a good ID book, join some Facebook groups, do a guided tour. REALLY know what you're looking for BEFORE you start picking.

There is an abundance of good food out there but there's plenty of stuff not suitable for consumption as well.

Nature isn't a supermarket.
Treat her with respect 💚

Its wild garlic season! I come back from walking in the woods smelling like a pizzeria. I remember making pesto with it some years ago, maybe it's time to make some more? 🤔
