Who's in the mood for a #SheelaNaGig this morning?
This beauty at Behy, Co Sligo is said to bestow fertility so women have rubbed her vulva for generations. You can see where the paint has been rubbed away. It's unusual for a Sheela to be painted but maybe hers is just remarkably well-preserved. Probably cos she lives in a shed guarded by a brown bull!
We visited this Sheela on one of our #WildGees trips

Sadly, recent mobilisation of non-inclusive voices seeking to limit #LGBTQ rights have hijacked suffragette colours on social media. We’ll continue to celebrate suffragettes (though not all of them were as sound as Hanna, Louie et al) but want to distance ourselves from those who are determined to define women by narrow biological functions. #WildGees feminism is intersectional and inclusive, so we'll finish this🧵in solidarity with our trans sisters 🏳️⚧️

We encountered Helena and the 77 women quilt on our first #WildGees trip

We loved the quilt so much, we created a Wikipedia article for it:

Our #WildGees treat for #NollaignamBan was A Mary Magdalene Experience by artist Grace Dyas at Rua Red in Tallaght. Last in the series, this is completely different to previous Mary Magdalene shows. Each has been an event but this is the first with a sense of place in Tallaght. And it's hilarious! We loved it ❤️ Beautiful performance from Jordanne Jones as Tina / Mary Magdalene. And the lad in the 'audience' wanting to go for chips. Get yourselves to Rua Red (right beside the Luas) by 3 February
For Nollaig na mBan, a🧵of some amazing women who all have 6 January in common. We may even get up to some #WildGees shenanigans later for the day that's in it. Happy Nollaig na mBan to all who celebrate 🎉
Writer Maeve Brennan was born #OTD in 1917. Her family moved to US where she worked for New Yorker, published short stories. Neglected at home though Dublin is setting for many of her stories. Rediscovered in 2000s, republished. Check out episode on @backlistedpod #irishwomenshistory

Maria Edgeworth, born #OTD 1768, featured in our #WildGees travels when we visited Edgeworthstown (named not for her but her Da). This lovely mural of her poem has an apt New Year's message:
"So to my life's departing year supplies fragrance more rare and bloom that never dies"
Her prolific writing career spanned novels, essays, poetry, children's books and works on education.
