AAAS: "Wildlife tracking collar powers itself as animals roam." Replacing batteries in animal tracking devices time-consuming for wildlife scientists + stressful for animals. "[New] approach could help researchers monitor animals across entire life spans, making things easier for both." Many trackers solar-powered, but these don't work for nocturnal or aquatic creatures, nor species living in forests or caves. 'Nonrechargeable lithium-ion batteries—heralded by manufacturers as lasting for decades—another option, but field experience shows very hot or cold temperatures considerably shorten their life spans.' Biologists at Natural History Museum of Denmark looked at a Swiss smartwatch powered by a tiny generator that converts the wearer’s movement into an electromagnetic current that powers the device. At the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior a tiny generator was designed which harvests energy from side-to-side movement. "As a pendulum within swings, it generates current by sliding a ferromagnetic ring across a copper coil." The energy is stored in a lithium supercapacitor, which is capable of 40 times as many charge cycles as a standard lithium battery. 'Researchers packaged their new battery with a low-power GPS tracker, accelerometer, and a tiny computer inside a waterproof, fang-resistant case.' The schematics for the device are in the paper + freely available. Wonder if we could persuade our grandchildren to wear one.

Tapetum lucidum..Yes that’s the layer located behind the retinas of lions which effectively enhances their night vision and supports nocturnal hunting. And same layer is responsible for reflecting the light back in the nights, which you might have seen in many documentaries taken during the dark hours from induced light sources.

The sentinel of spring, the humble but much-loved European robin. At this time of year their distinctive song rings out from high perches across towns and countryside as they establish and maintain territories.
