#OnThisDay (2020) I went downtown and caught a crow after multiple reports on a local bird group of it being injured and unable to fly.
Catching a crow isn't easy. It couldn't fly, but it sure can run.
Anyway, I took it to the vets to get a health check and he got released shortly afterwards in a local park.

Back in February I put my then 15 month old grandson in the car and took him with me to pick up an injured eastern screech owl from the finder and transport her to a raptor rehabilitator. Today we got back in the car to watch her return to the wild, his first release!

Wouldn't normally pick up a checkout aisle magazine but this issue seems cool.
When the writer of this feature approached me, I took advantage of the opportunity to spread the word about wildlife rehabilitation and turtles.
(For the record, I never said anything about breaking out of my shell, but it's a cute headline.)

Me: Sam, please look at the camera at least once.
Sam, every time we tried to get a picture: Nope.
Sam is a saw-whet owl, our smallest native species. He lost part of his wing and got to be an educational ambassador kept by my friend Nancy. Nancy has been teaching me about raptor handling and rehabilitation and let me hold Sam for awhile while we volunteered with our regional wildlife rehabilitator organization at an event.

Adirondack Explorer profiled my turtle rescue efforts in a piece last year and used some of that interview in a very important new article.

Another turtle is in the house. This lucky little painted turtle has only a minor crack and sore back legs. He has some pain and anti-inflammatory meds on board to help with that. Yesterday's snapping turtle was 23lbs/10kg, making her the biggest adult currently in care. (I have some that spent the winter with me to allow more time for healing.) At 6oz/162g, this little guy is the smallest adult here now.
Keep watching out for turtles.
One injured turtle in last night. Waiting in the car now for a volunteer transporter to bring me another one. It is 85F/29C in northeastern New York where it is normally 50F in April. There was still snow on the ground this morning. This is ridiculous. Turtle season shouldn't start until mid-May, but I can't blame them for wanting to get out in the sun. Watch out for turtles, friends. They are on the roads.

@debbiephilp #WildlifeRehab. Thank you for helping the #Turtle youth. Good luck with the swamp dream.
For the second year in a row, my turtle rehab season began on Easter weekend. This year's first turtle was a wee painted turtle hatchling with poor timing. He emerged from the nest where he spent winter and headed for a lake that still had ice on it. Luckily a family was playing on the beach, a youngster spotted him, and an adult called for help. He'll get first class accommodations for a few months while he grows a bit and will be released in summer.

She looks silly grabbing that food, but I was doing a happy dance. This #CommonSnappingTurtle ate on her own yesterday for the first time in 20 months. She'd been hit by a car during nesting season 2021 and had severe head trauma and a broken beak. Turtles heal slowly from head injuries and all I can do is provide supportive care, wait, and hope they come around. Some don't, so I celebrate milestones like this, no matter how silly.

My daughter, an EMT, just started full time with our county EMS and that means lots of grandbaby-sitting for me. While she is busy saving human lives, I've got a 15 month old assistant in the "wildlife ambulance." His first rescue was an injured screech owl who was safely delivered to a raptor rehabilitator. Not many calls this time of year, but it's good that we can practice car seat and animal carrier logistics before turtle nesting season starts.

Last week, the Scott River Watershed Council fisheries crew were doing spawning surveys for Coho Salmon and found a distressed young beaver. They were able pick it up and bring it to safety. After a restful night, eating willow and a carrot, it made its way down to Sonoma to a wildlife rehabilitation center with the hopes that it can be returned to its natal stream and family.
Good luck, little #beaver!

O hai.
(Pete is demonstrating what a wildlife rehab fail looks like. He is technically wild and free, but he roosts on a broken bit of an old chimney we haven't taken down and likes to visit with me when I'm outside. Pigeons aren't protected by law, but they use that loophole to their advantage.)
While my wildlife rehabilitation is mainly turtles, I am one of only a handful of rehabbers in my county and get calls for every species for stabilization and transport. Tonight's call was for a great horned owl found in a pile of snow by the side of the road. Hanging in there so far. Hoping he or she will make it through the night so they can go to a raptor rehabber in the morning for continued care.
Now if I can just get my tree up before the holiday...

So far I am having more luck with Mastodon than training these two to carry messages.
Rock doves Pete and Lefty were orphaned as squabs. I raised them and they have technically been released but they still hang around and demand food and attention.
