Snow didn't stop our usual pheasant from completing his rounds, here he is after checking the first feeder, now striding off to check at the back of the house. The low winter sun helped to reveal his amazing colours.

This hooded crow, corvus cornix, is another regular. He approaches with caution, often settling on a fence post to check things out. He may then hop onto the grass below the bird feeders or he may take to the sky and be away in a moment.

Pheasants are perhaps our brightest coloured birds here at Four Oaks and are regular visitors to our garden. This male pheasant was one of two that came by today to clear up seeds dropped from the feeders by smaller birds. They are very fast flyers when they want but nearly always walk in & out, they'll go through or under the fence rather than over.

The jays usually stay up in the cover of trees but sometimes they are tempted down to our feeder and we are treated to a brief glimpse. The jay (garrulus glandarius) is one of the most colourful of the corvids (crow family) with its distinctive blue feathers, they like acorns so are at home here amongst our oak trees.

A woodpecker is always a delight to see. This greater spotted woodpecker (dendrocopos major) looks to be a female and is one of our regulars but is hard to spot in the trees, the little patch of red helps.

One of the most incredibly wildlife encounters I've ever had was last spring when Orcas visited the local bay in Caithness, Scotland.

Absolutely amazing to be able to see them under the water as they patrolled the shallows looking for seals.

One of my favourite visitors is the pied wagtail (Motacilla alba), these birds are comfortable coming very close and spend a lot of time in the summer hunting insects on our deck. I miss them over the winter and look forward to their return.

Another of our small visitors, this little dash of colour is a yellowhammer (emberiza citrinella), here perched on a fence wire near our bird feeder.

Sparrows buzzing in and out of our rickety bird table last weekend.
This is as big a reward for gardening as roses or dahlias laden with beautiful heads.
nature if life affirming 💚

Did you know that owls have the ability to rotate their necks an incredible 270 degrees?

Owls have fixed eye sockets meaning their eyes can’t rotate, which is why they need turn their heads to follow an object.

They are able to achieve this extreme level of movement because they have backup arteries that continue to deliver blood to their eyes and brains, even when their necks are twisted all the way round.

So today I did my monthly count for the Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) on of coastline of St. Mary’s Bay on Scapa Flow. The weather couldn’t have been better!

Eighteen different species and hundeds of individuals. The data collected will be sent to the British Trust for Ornithology and can be accessed by scientists all over the world.

Not bad for an afternoon stroll!

Did you know that Puffins can dive a whopping 60 metres from the surface of the water in order to feed?

Whilst they don’t exclusively mate for life, when they return from sea they tend to find the burrow where they previously raised their chicks and usually pair up with the same partner.

They lay just one egg each year and both take turns to care for the puffling until it’s ready to fledge.

How cool is that?

Autumnal creatures at Bamff Wildland.
Recently tamworth pigs & cattle have been allowed to roam freely around, creating helpful disturbances in the landscape dramatically reshaped by beavers (who have been here since 2002).
I’ve been making tiny films like this about the rewilding project for a few years now & soon will embark on a more ambitious approach featuring live musicians/text etc.
