This is the most recent mate of the female swan along my local stretch of canal. They lost all 7 of their first cygnets to avian flu last year, and the female lost her previous mate of many years and all but one of their cygnets to avian flu the year before that. I hope that this year they breed successfully and that their cygnets survive into adulthood.

Happiness is looking out of one's kitchen window into one's mid terrace small backyard garden on a dismal winter's day and seeing, completely out of context, a grey wagtail. I saw one along Lancaster Canal some years ago, and there's a slow running stream within half a mile, plus the River Lune just over half a mile away, but my garden? Maybe it's all the shrubs and trees, mostly in containers, and the bird food making a difference.

Went to Walthamstow Wetlands for a bit of birding and had a great time. The high light of the day was this adorable Little Grebe. This is the first time have ever spotted one, and I think I may be in love!

Wild peregrine in Dorset, August 2021. After taking these, some bloke leant over to look at my camera screen and said "I think you've peaked there, mate." Tbh he was right, which is why these days I mostly take pictures of fake animals...

Went to see who was eating the crab apples today - this cute female chaffinch paused for a photo, they are seed and insect eaters so not muching on the crabs. Very common bird but not seen many in my garden so very pleased to have her. Again another pic with next doors house as background - be kind to nature in your garden and you will see all sorts.

So this happened to me today. I was walking down a track and ahead on the ground next to a tree was a squirrel. Said squirrel ran across the track to a second tree, up the tree, along a branch, leapt acrobatically across to a branch on the first tree and down to where it started. Why?

Once down to just a few birds in Wales the UK population is a real success story for the Red kite. And I for one am so glad as they are such wonderful birds to watch as they soar overhead or swoop down to grab food. And they keep the place clean as well, at least with regards to carrion or discarded meat.

I recall visiting Wales just for them all those years ago, and maybe that is why I still get a thrill when I see one.
