Nat says: I saw #WilliamGaddis & #WilliamGass together at the 92nd Street Y in NYC many years ago. Gaddis refused to read--he said reading was something one did in private. He was eloquent & smart & ultimately better, I think, than it would have been if he'd read something from his own work. Gass, who I often disagree with but admire his intellect & enjoy reading, then decided he should read a passage from Gaddis. He chose the very same passage from #JR that I always read folks to entice them into reading it. He butchered it.
