William Gass's THE TUNNEL was once ubiquitous in every decently stocked independent bookstore not too long ago. But now used copies run anywhere from $60 to $100. Too rich for my blood. I regret not picking it up.
Another reminder that experimental and literary fiction goes out of print faster than an adulterer running away from an angry husband. Buy those weird and esoteric books now. They may not be available in twenty years.
Nat says: I saw #WilliamGaddis & #WilliamGass together at the 92nd Street Y in NYC many years ago. Gaddis refused to read--he said reading was something one did in private. He was eloquent & smart & ultimately better, I think, than it would have been if he'd read something from his own work. Gass, who I often disagree with but admire his intellect & enjoy reading, then decided he should read a passage from Gaddis. He chose the very same passage from #JR that I always read folks to entice them into reading it. He butchered it.
