Someone reached out to me about the 2003 blackout that I barely remember, after I posted some old photos of Williamsburg on that day and I looked up my old blog on way back machine and found my post for Aug 15, 2003. I miss manual, self-hosted blogging (and Fotolog).

Williams was working for Richard Woodhull, whose real estate speculation was a failure. Another guy - Thomas Morrell - had a rival development south of Grand Street called Yorkton that was more successful. Except for the naming - #Williamsburg won out as the name for Yorkton and Williamsburg(h).

This (from Names of NY, a generally good read) is flat out wrong. Williams laid out the streets for the Northside (Grand to North 15th) in 1802. The patriot naming happened 1886 in East #Brooklyn - it wasn’t until the 20th century that this area began to be called #Williamsburg.

i thiught it couldn't happen here, but the #nyc department of transportation is blocking off berry street at our corner in #williamsburg & making it pedestrian/bikes only! now the only thing causing chaos & interrupting safe travel is the parking garage to whole foods, as always a fuckin' pox. hope they really block it, though. i'd kinda stopped using the open street because so many cars ignore the signs.

Local #williamsburg history note - 15 years after this, Simeon Jocelyn became the pastor for a mixed-race church in the Town of Williamsburgh. He was pastor for f the First Congregational Church for about 20 years.
