It was released on the Blue Rock label (4014) in May 1965 with "Sir Mack Rice" as the artist. The song uses an AAB layout with a 24-bar structure. It gained greater popularity when #WilsonPickett #covered it the following year on a single, a version that was also released on the 1966 album #TheWickedPickett. Also in 1966.

It later became a bigger hit in versions by #Cannibal_TheHeadhunters and #WilsonPickett. A version by #TheeMidniters reached number 27 in Canada on March 22, 1965. The song references a number of dance styles/moves including #theTwist, the Alligator, #theMashedPotato, #theWatusi and #thePony.

From the “Today I Learned” file, I never knew Wilson Pickett did a cover version of “Sugar, Sugar,” the quintessential bubblegum hit for The Archies. I’ve never cared for bubblegum music or the Archies, so hearing Wilson Pickett do this song and make it enjoyable was a real treat.
