In traditional Islamic architecture, Mashrabiyya (Arabic مشربية) is the name given to decorative wooden lattices that were used as lattice barriers in mosques or as window lattices or as balcony claddings in residential buildings and palaces. Mashrabiyyas are usually composed of carved or turned pieces of wood arranged in geometric patterns. They serve to protect against direct sunlight as well as exposure, as well as room ventilation.
